Melasti Beach is a location we usually photograph in the afternoon.
Its open coastline, limestone walls and sunset-facing beach naturally lend themselves to the warmer light later in the day. For Kiran and AK, however, we wanted to see what this familiar location might offer at the beginning of the morning.
The result felt completely different.
Sunrise entered softly through the cliffs, creating bright haze, long shadows and a quiet atmosphere across the rocky coast. Instead of waiting for the day to end, Kiran and AK began theirs by walking beside the ocean, laughing together and allowing the session to unfold without too much formality.
It suited them perfectly.
Beginning Before the Beach Woke Up
Kiran and AK arrived dressed simply in white.
Kiran wore a relaxed white dress, while AK paired a white shirt with neutral trousers. Without elaborate outfits or decorative props, the colours of the morning became part of their styling: pale rock, soft blue water and a sky still carrying the gentleness of sunrise.
The first photographs gave them plenty of room to settle in.
They walked across the rocks, held hands and looked towards the ocean. Although Kiran felt fairly comfortable in front of the camera, AK was initially a little more reserved. Beginning with movement allowed them to relax without immediately being placed into formal poses.
There was no need to rush. The morning was only beginning.
Somewhere Between a Portrait and a Pause
Above a quiet coastal cove, Kiran and AK sat together as sunlight began entering from behind the cliffs.
The strong backlight created an almost dreamlike haze around them, while the water below remained soft and calm. This part of the session felt less like a formal photoshoot and more like a pause during one of their own adventures.
Exploring new places has always been something they enjoy together. So have long drives, finding good coffee and discovering new restaurants.
Sitting above the ocean in the early morning felt naturally connected to that part of their relationship.
There was guidance when they needed it—where to sit, how to turn towards the light or when to move closer—but their expressions were allowed to develop from real conversation and interaction.
Some frames feel romantic and still. Others capture the beginning of a joke or a smile that arrived before either of them remembered the camera was there.
Playful, Romantic and Calm
Kiran described their relationship using three words: playful, romantic and calm.
All three appeared naturally as they moved away from the rocky coast.
There were quiet moments beneath the morning light, followed by photographs of them walking hand-in-hand along the path. Gradually, their movement became less controlled. Kiran pulled AK forward, they looked back at one another, and walking eventually turned into running.
The laughter did not need to be requested.
This was the balance they wanted from the session: enough direction to feel confident, but enough freedom for their own relationship to take over.
Their coordinated white outfits gave the photographs a timeless simplicity, while the movement kept everything from feeling too polished or overly arranged.
Morning Light Between the Limestone Walls
The road between Melasti’s limestone walls gave the session its most cinematic chapter.
This spot is already dramatic in the afternoon, but sunrise changed the way it felt. Morning light entered through the opening above the cliffs, creating a luminous haze at the end of the road and revealing subtle textures across the stone.
After the openness of the coastline, Kiran and AK were suddenly surrounded by towering walls.
They walked through the corridor and occasionally stopped where the light created a natural frame around them. Some photographs emphasised the scale of the cliffs. Others allowed the rock to become a simple textured background for closer portraits.
Kiran’s white dress brought softness into the rugged setting, while AK’s relaxed styling preserved the casual mood of the morning.
The location looked cinematic, but their interaction remained uncomplicated—small smiles, hands naturally finding one another and the comfortable closeness of two people who did not need to manufacture chemistry for the camera.
Following the Sunrise onto the Sand
When Kiran and AK reached the open beach, the low morning sun stretched their shadows across the sand.
The coastline became brighter and more spacious. They ran beside the water, looked back at one another and moved through the frame without worrying about keeping every step perfectly coordinated.
Some of the strongest photographs came from this contrast: Kiran and AK appearing small within the scale of Melasti Beach, followed by close portraits that brought all the attention back to their expressions.
Kiran had hoped for photographs that felt dreamy and cinematic. Sunrise delivered that mood differently from the sunset light we usually find here.
It felt softer, quieter and slightly unexpected.
Even within the most romantic setting, however, their playfulness remained visible.
A Different Side of Melasti
The final sequence took Kiran and AK down from the rocks and into the water.
By this point, any awkwardness from the beginning had disappeared. They held hands, stepped into the waves and ran towards the camera as the sea breeze caught Kiran’s dress.
It was an ending that felt completely suited to them.
They had begun carefully, walking across the rocks and becoming comfortable with the camera. They finished laughing, moving freely and no longer thinking about whether every gesture looked perfectly posed.
Four years after meeting through social media, Kiran and AK have built a relationship around exploration, long drives, good coffee and discovering new places together.
Their sunrise pre-wedding at Melasti Beach became one more shared adventure—and a chance for us to see a familiar Bali location in an entirely different light.
Playful, romantic and calm, just as they described themselves.
And most importantly, it looked like them.
