Gold Threads and Blue Blooms:
A Wedding at Umana Bali

Red wedding symbols marked the doorway, and embroidered gold fabric caught the light inside. In the tea ceremony photographs, Karie and Waku knelt before seated elders, offering cups with both hands. Red envelopes passed between them; smiles and embraces filled the frames that followed.
These close, unhurried images give their Umana Bali wedding a particularly warm opening. Before the white aisle, the evening chandeliers, and the fireworks, there were hands reaching towards one another across a small space.

The preparation photographs bring together the textures of the day: embroidered wedding outfits, a white jacket hanging against dark wood, bridal shoes beside flowers, and rings resting in their box. Around these details, people gathered in the villa while Karie's hair was being arranged.
Her gold-toned outfit and Waku's embroidered jacket introduced a rich palette of gold, cream, and red. During the tea ceremony, the photographs move between the couple's careful gestures and the expressions of those seated opposite them. There is room for formality, but also for a smile, a glance, and an embrace.
The wider photographs establish the setting. The closer ones draw attention to the people within it. Together, they give this part of the wedding its own distinct rhythm.

A White Aisle, Framed in Blue
For the outdoor ceremony, the palette changed. Karie wore a strapless white gown with a long train and veil; Waku paired a white dinner jacket with black trousers and a bow tie. Blue and white flowers lined the aisle, with tall gold geometric frames behind the ceremony space.
The entrance photographs carry a sense of movement: attendants with ceremonial parasols, Karie walking beside a man in a blue suit, and guests turning towards the aisle. At the front, the couple stood together amid flowers, with the sea visible beyond the setting.
Later in the gallery, their walk between the guests becomes a lively sequence of raised hands, scattered petals, and broad smiles. The same white aisle that gave the ceremony its clean lines now held a much more animated scene.

Room for Two
The couple portraits bring the focus closer again. In some, Karie's train spreads across the pale paving, echoing the length of the aisle. In others, the blue floral arrangements frame their faces as they lean towards each other.
Along the lawn, the compositions open out to include the coastline. A flowering hedge, the curve of the shore, and the sea give these portraits a clear sense of place, while the couple remain close together in the foreground.
The variety is part of what makes the collection engaging: a wide view that holds the landscape, followed by a small gesture or a face seen at close range.

Chandeliers, Sparklers, and Paper Portraits
At night, the blue and white flowers appeared beneath glowing chandeliers suspended from curved gold stands. White table linen, blue napkins, and warm lights carried the celebration into a different atmosphere.
Karie changed into an outfit with a sparkling bodice and a full, textured white skirt, while Waku wore a black suit. Guests lined the lawn holding sparklers as the pair walked between them, raising their arms and smiling.
The reception photographs include a cake cutting, a tower of glasses, and guests gathered around the tables. There is also a wonderfully playful detail: sheets of hand-drawn portraits, with Karie and Waku holding drawings up for the camera. Among the carefully arranged flowers and lights, these paper portraits bring a looser, personal texture to the evening.
Then the scale changes once more. Fireworks spread across the dark sky in red and white trails, with the couple silhouetted beneath them. The image is expansive and theatrical, yet its centre remains simple: two figures standing side by side.
From the tea ceremony to the fireworks, Karie and Waku's wedding holds both intimacy and spectacle. Photographing those shifts meant giving the smallest gestures as much attention as the largest scenes.
